I vote we merge News and (no longer used) Reddit categories into General. Because choosing between News and General when you post isn't easy, and we don't need to separate them.
The Site category so far was useful only when this forum was launched, and I wouldn't be against merging that too.

Meta category is a must. Announcements are bound to happen.
Cc'ing some input from the chat room:
sol: I think it makes sense to keep "News" separate if it is user to only post official updates on releases of mature projects like hledger , ledger, Beancount.
sol: Else, it could be merged with General.
sm: I find the boundary between News and General is often fuzzy
sol: I'd think new version release is a pretty clear line. What's blurry, I'd think, is what all software to include for that. Beancount, ledger, hledger are obvious. But what about Paisa? Or hledger-plot? Or pricehist? Should new releases of those (and others) also go under News?
sol: News could be low frequency postings specifically about new software versions being released. That could distinguish it from General.
sol: News thus becomes about announcements. I think there's some value in that.
sm: What about: new (or old) blog posts; new (or old) Reddit/Hacker News posts about old blog posts; new or old Reddit/hn discussions not referencing any particular dated event; old announcements..
sm: Announcements of work in progress not yet released, phrased as more of a question or discussion starter than an announcement..
sol: All those, I'd think are general.
It was the #plaintextaccounting chat room on Matrix.
plaintextaccounting.org > News & discussion has them all.
