Thanks to Simon Michael for systematically performance testing PTA tools, and gently pointing out the algorithmic problems with Tackler’s tree mode Balance reports. He also gave a tip about how to efficiently calculate the balance report’s tree form.
And it was hledger's pathological test data, which revealed these inefficient algorithms in the first place.
